Nigeria is a very traditional society that has deeply rooted beliefs that they find very hard to shake off. One of them is their stance on homophobia.
While the world is evolving and some Nigerians are quite accommodating about the idea of being gay, the majority are not and it leads to a clash of opinions on social media.
Just recently, Nigerian LGBT activist, Bisi Alimi, took to social media to slam popular singer, Simi, over her view on black hate.
And we have our own people killing us in the streets and it has become so normal now. It's almost more abhorrent. As fucked as it is, it is one thing for people to be intimidated by and hate you for being different, but how do you not value someone the exact same as you?

To that, Alimi responded that Simi is a hypocrite for sympathising with abroad blackness while ‘promoting local homophobic violence against their own’.

Can someone please tell her it is the same hate she represents? Does she need a mirror? https://t.co/M2xjKX2nDJ

Apparently, Simi who hosts a Youtube show called Stoopid Sessions had hinted at being homophobic after saying that“it just doesn’t seem natural to me.”
She also said:“They say they’re born that way, but I haven’t seen any biological proof.”

Some months ago, you Simi put the lives of thousand of LGBTQ+ persons in harm’s way by implying that homosexuality is rather unnatural and learned. You said gay people are influenced by mainstream media and culture. I know you know the implications of everything you said. https://t.co/uBzVfnYJWB
